How to clasify casual puzzles

I try to make some classification system for casual puzzles. That’s harder then I thought. First we have to define which game counts as casual puzzle. It has to be a casual game/puzzle. Casual means that you play it for a few minutes and then you have completed a level or you continue with your normal business. A jigsaw puzzle or a soduko doesn’t meet that requirement, you cannot play them for a few minutes and then continue with something else. So this is requirement 1.

Even the bitterest fruit has sugar in it.

– Terry a O’Neal

The trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.

– Molière

The other requirement is that it has to be a puzzle. You must use your brains to complete it. Reaction time or special skills should not be the main objective. I think that any match 3 kind of game does not count as a puzzle, so candy crush is out.

The requirements for being a casual puzzle are:

1 – being a casual game

2- There has to be a puzzle element.

In another blog I have elaborated about defining a casual game.

For now I have created a number of categories for casual puzzles, its not perfect but it is my first attempt. This list is presented in the chapter about casual games.
